About some of my paintings

Alien
Image
A recurrent theme of my paintings is alienation, a feeling of disconnection and not belonging. I express this by means of the house in the landscape. Houses often take on the colours and textures of the environment that contains them. However in this painting the house is noticeably disconnected from its environment. It is not rooted to the land but floats above it.  In my paintings I don’t try to create an illusion of reality and my methods draw attention to this. I hope this leads the viewer to question their assumptions about painting.

Misfit

Again this painting is also about alienation. It can be regarded as a self-portrait. It expresses my feelings of not belonging and never feeling at home. The house presents itself in a fake Barbie pink but still it does not fit the bright landscape. The perspective doesn’t match and it floats above the land unable to find its roots. I hoped to create a sense of dissonance in this work. Although the image appears bright and sunny there is a stillness and artificiality in the landscape that creates a feeling of the uncanny.

 Spat from the Maw

This painting ask the question “how did I end up here?” Like most of my paintings it is autobiographical. This particular house is from where I spent my childhood holidays but it has been chewed up and spat out in an alien place. The environment is undefined and ethereal. The house has telephone wires but they reach out into space unable to communicate. The house is lost, isolated and on a tumultuous journey.
